Scam or Unwanted Calls When you get a call, if you don’t recognize it, do not answer. Let it go to voicemail, and then call back if it is something you should respond to (but not car warranties, not court judgments, not a computer virus repair, not a grandkid is needing to post bond to get out of jail, not any scam-worthy type messages). It is not a good idea for most of us to engage with a scammer. If you do get a call from a known number but it doesn't seem quite right, realize that scammers "spoof" real numbers so you will answer, even your own number.
I’ve talked to scammers on behalf of my dad, and they are not pleasant. They try to deflect their garbage back (like if I am so bent on helping him now, where was I before he needed help). They are just trying to use emotional tactics to pull at victims and make them feel anxious or just react before thinking.
I got several messages recently – “we were doing work in your area and if you need yardwork call us” – I blocked the number then got the same message from another number and another – you can bet I won’t use them nor call back. That was on a phone they have NO idea of an address for it to know they are in “my area” so that is a red flag.
The best thing is to not answer, or to hang up, and then block the number.
