I am Getting Rogue Texts Over and Over
I get texts for “jobs” or maybe just “hello” and nothing else. Some are a huge email chain that shows a load of people being sent the same text. Some are for toll fees unpaid. Some ask if I am coming to a barbeque. There are many more, but all coming from unknown phone numbers.
I do not reply to them – I block and delete them. I never reply and do not open the message to alert them that it’s been read. I do not want to confirm that the scammer found a working phone number. When you acknowledge messages then they know your number is a “live” one for more scams, and can be sold to other scammers.
It’s better to block the sender and not let them know it was even delivered.
***Constant Repeated Texts:
*Can you talk?
*Hello
*Hi Cindy, how are you doing? (I am not Cindy)I
*Happy Birthday Kayla – use this link for 10% off your pilates (my name is not Kayla)
*We have a job you would do well it
*I’m a recruiter at Tesla and you are a good fit
*You need to pay your toll fee
*Many recipients on a group chat with or without a message
*Your package is arriving but if you are not home it will be in the warehouse – call to reschedule
These are a few of the random texts I have been getting, amongst others, that are definitely scams. I block them on my phone. There are several from the 63 country code, which is a Philippines country code. A Philippine number would not belong to a USPS account, or local toll fee, or a local job opportunity, etc.
The group chat ones are just garbage – nothing of value, if anything, is in the content. It is prompting you to reach back, perhaps to ask who sent it. Just block it and all the recipients – do not “leave the conversation” as it confirms your phone number as a live number and it can then be sold to more scammers.
The ones asking if you can talk, return a “hello” or giving a random name (to call back to say they have the wrong number) are hoping that you will reply. That will confirm your number as a good one to pester and sell to other scammers. Block and delete the “wrong number” texts without replying. If you reply to those, they will likely start a short conversation like “how have you been doing?” and when you engage more, they eventually want pull a scam on you. Whether to ask for money for an investment opportunity or buy something, or to try to get to your other friends, or who knows anymore.
The scams keep coming and getting sneakier. They try to catch you off guard, as in you are delinquent in paying your toll fees. You remember you used the toll lane some weeks ago and forgot whether you paid a bill but realize you should pay before things get worse. If you are unsure, log into your bank account to see if you made a payment. On the other hand, you do not get TEXT messages from the State to pay those bills – it’s always a paper bill. So, you should block and report the scam text.
If looking for a job, rely on your recruiter or your own searches and not on random texts from scammers. I do not know how far they will take the scam but be sure they want a fee from you, or worse.
Some texts are sent to a group of numbers. Rather than “leaving the conversation” I just block all of the numbers. To “leave” will give everyone a confirmation that your number has a live person on the other end, and you will get more texts from the original scammer.Ignore, report (when you can) and block random texts so you will not get more from that number. They will change the incoming number and send again, but as long as you do not reply, they do not know that your number is a good one.
