Why are Medicines Advertised on TV? And the Side-Effects!
TV pharmaceutical ads should not be allowed. No one should go to the doctor asking for a medication based on TV ads. Other countries do not allow it. This has been a pet peeve for many years.
Just as you can Google symptoms and find a treatment or medicine, you can also get bad advice. A doctor needs to evaluate your symptoms and see if any random medicine would be appropriate or not, based on many factors.
Doctors should not prescribe random medications – there are many potential interactions with foods and other medicines/supplements that need to be looked at. Often the interactions are not even known yet because the medicines have not been tested for long enough, nor with every potential other medication out there.
Many times, someone has some symptoms, but in searching online or listening to pharmaceutical commercials, more symptoms come up and the person might convince herself she also has those other symptoms. The power of suggestion is great and may cause more issues with a wrong analysis.
Just hearing the side-effects should be enough to decide you don’t want the advertised medication. Many side-effects sound worse than the condition!
