How to Thwart Skimmers
Gas pumping, buying groceries, purchasing at the stores – when you use your credit or debit card, use tap to pay the bill. Fake skimmers are placed on so many of the actual card readers that then extract your card information. When you tap to pay, so far there is no way to scam the encrypted data. The only risk is if someone pulls your card information in a local range, using a handheld skimmer that can pull your card data from your wallet or when a waiter takes your card at a restaurant.
I keep my credit and debit cards in RFD cases so no device can pull the information from them by a remote skimmer. I also use a multi frequency blocker card near my card, so the information is all scrambled to a skimmer. The only time it’s at risk is when I take it out to make a tap to pay payment at a store, further from my frequency blocker card protects (and if someone has a skimmer near me).
Once at a fast-food drive through, someone skimmed my card behind the counter and used it to buy auto parts in a Texas store. I tend to pay with cash at fast food restaurants now, if I ever go to one (I try to eat healthier than fast food places offer).
I do not like handing my card to a server or cashier. I have a different account (with a debit card) in a different credit union that cannot accept over a limit of zero. I load just enough money into it to pay into the card just in case the server loses the card or it gets skimmed, as it isn’t connected to any other bank account to draw insufficient funds from. I used it to pay over the phone once and the next day someone used it to order on Amazon, but it was declined since there was not enough money in the account. I had to get a new card and cut that one up but at least it did not take any more from my account.
Protect your card information and thwart the skimmer scammers.
