Block Rogue Contacts and Texts
I get weird texts all the time.
One was from someone sending me various family photos from 1960 and before. I did not know anyone in the photos and the phone number that sent it to me was only one digit different from my phone number (they might have hit a wrong number – but if a scam they wanted you to reply). I had to block it to stop the influx of photos.
Another one that came the next day (from a different number than the one I’d previously blocked) for a hypnotism appointment which I never would have thought to make for any reason. The first one was to confirm an appointment (which I blocked), then today asked me to register for lessons on how to hypnotize others. I also blocked that number.
And now “Why can’t I get in touch with you? Did you block me?” – well, you sure will get blocked now. That phone number is not in my contacts.
Do not respond to texts you do not know or are not meant for you. If they texted the wrong person, then it’s up to them to figure it out. These days it’s just likely that there is a scam person wanting you to respond so they can verify the phone number is a good one and then sell it to other scammers or run a scam on you. A wrong appointment reminder is a good way to get you to respond to tell them they have the wrong number. Don’t be tempted to respond. Just block the number. If they are legitimate and try again, they will not get through and perhaps then try another way to contact, like sending an email. The same goes for those photos they sent me – they will figure out they sent it to the wrong person, or at least you will not engage with them if it is a scam.
I do not answer phone calls that I do not know or recognize. Many are scams. Many are trying to get you to sign up for a health plan at enrollment time (they talked my dad into changing his, many times). Many are political calls. If a call is important the caller will leave a voicemail. When you retrieve a voicemail, you can then return the call if the message is legitimate.
I get many scam emails, as well. I block the ones that are not wanted. I look in my junk mail file to make sure nothing of importance ended up there and then delete the whole junk box files. There are many from the “president” which are rampant – gripes, then ask for donations, and unlikely sent by the government and are random people trying to make a buck and get your card payment information. If you want to donate, look for a real donation entity and not use the likely bogus links on the random emails. Block emails too.
Block calls, texts, emails, and any other communications that you do not know nor are expecting. The scams are running rampant and try to trick you in every way to get your attention to respond.
